Deepening the Writing Life is a quiet writing retreat led by Barbara O'Neil, assisted by Laura Wainwright.
It is held at The Mabel Dodge Luhan House in Taos, New Mexico.
Schedule
Barbara leads classes and guided writing sessions which are designed to inspire each writer to generate new material, trust their voice and take risks.
Laura leads book discussions and hosts sessions for reading work aloud.
Every afternoon, optional sessions are available for more writing and for reading aloud.
We meet together as a group each morning and evening for writing, viewing a movie, or sharing work. Walks and field trips are part of the week as well.
Barbara meets with small groups in the afternoon.
Each group session may include sitting or walking meditation. No experience necessary.
A short reading list will be sent to participants. This is an alcohol-free week.
Behind writing, behind words, is no words. We need to know about that place. It gives us a larger perspective from which to handle language. Silence can be the door to listening, which is one of the great cornerstones to writing. ~Natalie Goldberg
Silence
Silence is an integral part of the retreat. It is a tool for deepening writing. But don't worry, you won't be silenced. There will be sharing with other writers during class, over dinner and, if you choose, "off campus" in the free time in the afternoons. There will be silence at Mabel's upon waking until we join for dinner at 6 pm. What a gift in this noisy world of ours! But don't worry. We hope you will embrace this chance to get away from the chatter of media and internet and conversation during our time together.
Silence is how we catch our breath. Silence is how we hear ourselves think, and how we hear the 'still, small voice' speaking within us. ~Julia Cameron

The Mabel Dodge Luhan House
MDLH was created by Mabel Dodge and her husband, Tony Luhan in 1920. They were hosts to many writers and artists including D.H. Lawrence, Willa Cather, Georgia O'Keeffe, Ansel Adams and others.
Mabel's house is now a retreat center for offerings that inspire the human spirit. To learn more, I encourage you to visit the website: mabeldodgeluhan.com
Taos valley is a wide, flat plain 7,000 feet above sea level in Northern New Mexico. To the Northeast are the pine covered Sangre de Cristo Mountains. To the west the Rio Grande cuts deep into its narrow gorge. Mabel's house is nestled on the border of Taos Pueblo land, which offers the sweet smell of sage and pinion on the open mesa, with Taos Mountain in clear view. It is within walking distance to galleries and cafes.
